He began his tenure with the department in the 1950s, and witnessed several changes to the warden's role and responsibilities over the span of his career. In 1971, he was named Montana's Wildlife Officer of the Year. Retired Montana Game Warden Wayne Fitzwater worked for the Fish & Game Department for 28 years, primarily serving in the southwestern districts. He retired in 1978, and still lives in Dillon, MT.
