Description

by Bruce Mattsson (Author), Robert Mattsson (Author)

This a compilation of stories of my younger days in the ship yard and on tug boats in New York Harbor and the New York State Barge Canal and the Hudson River.

Author Biography

Mr. Mattsson was employed in the New York Harbor Marine Industry for 57 years. He spent his younger years in the shipyard and on canal, harbor and coast wise tugboats. He sat before the USCG Examiner in 1961 and passed, receiving the first issue of his Engineers license. At the time he was employed by McAllister Towing of New York as an oiler. He then went on to become an Assistant Engineer, Chief Engineer, Port Engineer, Marine Superintendent and General Manager of their shipyard, Tug & Barge Dry Docks, Inc. Mr. Mattsson was General Manager of Tug & Barge Dry Docks and instrumental in moving the shipyard and its dry docks from Dock 19, Jersey City to a site at Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City in 1974. When that property was taken over by Jersey City in an Eminent Domain action in 1979, Mr. Mattsson left McAllister for Circle Line Sightseeing Company as their Marine Superintendent and Shipyard Manager in Mill Basin, Brooklyn, NY and quickly moved to the position of Senior Vice President of Operations at their 42nd Street, Manhattan, facility. In 1984 Mr. Mattsson left Circle Line to become the Marine Superintendent for the Eklof Marine Corp. in Mariners Harbor, Staten Island, New York. After a short period Mr. Mattsson was promoted to Vice President of Operations and Consultant to their affiliate, Clean Water of New York. Eklof Marine Corp. was bought out by management employees and an investment group to become K-Sea Transportation Corp. in 1999. In 2003 K-Sea went public on the New York Stock Exchange and Mr. Mattsson then became the Executive Vice President and held that position until his retirement in 2005. Mr. Mattsson has been married to his beautiful wife Gail, since 1961, has a son, Shawn, married to Christine and has two lovely granddaughters, Samantha and Kara. At the present time he does consulting, web sites and graphics for Kirby Offshore Marine, Clean Water of New York and United Maintenance Corp. He also does a maintenance article once a month for his community newsletter. In his spare time he does graphics for his friends at tugboats@yahoo.com, and the Lord Nelson Victory Tugs Group. He also builds tug models from scratch and has a web site at www.bellboatbob.com. Twice a week he has fun making believe he is a golfer. He has also published an eBook of his graphics available at Amazon. The title is 'Tug Boat Graphics & Illustrations'.
