He was selected to attend the University of Arizona and was awarded a Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering in June 1966. He served with the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam from July 1966 to May 1967 as the weapons platoon commander and then as the troop operations officer to C Troop, 1\/9 Cavalry. After leaving his first tour in Vietnam, Shrader was assigned to the TRADOC Armor Agency at Fort Knox on the Cheyenne helicopter and the Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle projects. In January 1969, he was ordered back to Vietnam and was made the Commander of C Troop, 1\/9 Cavalry. 31 March 1969 he was wounded and was hospitalized until July 1969 when he was assigned to the 8\/1 Cavalry as the Squadron Executive Officer in the 194th Armor Brigade at Fort Knox. From there he was sent to the Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. While enroute to Kansas, he went to Fort Rucker to consider rides in fixed and rotary wing aircraft, but declined both. Following the war, Shrader was assigned to the Office of Chief of Research and Development (OCRD) in the Pentagon in the Air Mobility Division and was later assigned to the 3\/63 Armor Battalion in Augsburg, Germany. From there he continued his studies at the Naval War College in New Port, Rhode Island where he graduated as a distinguished student. Colonel Shrader served as Commander of 1st Brigade, 1st Calvary (Iron Horse) Division at Fort Hood, Texas and commanded the Armor Engineer Board at Fort Knox. His final assignment was the Chief of Staff of the Third Armor Division in Frankfort, Germany.
