Description

by Douglas Jay Newsome (Author)

This book is about an individual who some might call a Griot who is passing down his story orally as a Griot might, this concept is in his genetic makeup as he happens to be an African American. The subject of this story is Henian Edward Newsome a rural North Carolina boy who was born on the banks of the Chowan River, delivered by a midwife in the families two room home on December 24, 1924.

In the community where Henian grew up there was little to no technology. The family had no automobile, no running water, no electricity, no television, no telephone, certainly no computers, no Internet, no email, not texting, no Facebook or Twitter.

Henian lived in a small two room home with his mother, father and brother. But the home was full of love and inviting to other family members and friends, indeed the family almost always had boarders living with them at no cost. Compassion and sharing as well as Christian principles guided the lives of the Newsome clan. The clans other core values included; love, education, discipline, and hard work.

Everyone who knows Henian knows him to be a very humble man and this is simply fundamental to his humble beginnings. Henian graduated from high school and shortly thereafter was drafted into the U.S. Army where he would serve honorably for the next 21 years through three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The Army was good to Henian as it provided him an education unmatched by the finest universities in the country. The Army trusted this African American from small town U.S.A. to work on nuclear weapons, the first for any African American in the United States. The U.S. Army allowed Henian Edward Newsome to travel the globe and retire in comfort.

This book is the story of Henian Edward Newsome and his humble beginnings where he relied on Molasses, Fatback and Biscuits for nourishment as a child. Molasses, Fatback and Biscuits the true breakfast of winners.
