Description

by Domingo Madulid (Author), Gizzele Delos Santos-Eustaquio (Illustrator)

FROM THE RIDGES OF THE CORDILLERAS TO THE FORESTS OF MINDANAO, THE PHILIPPINES IS HOME TO A REMARKABLE ARRAY OF FLOWERING PLANTS. THIS VOLUME PRESENTS A VISUAL AND BOTANICAL JOURNEY THROUGH A CURATED SELECTION OF SPECIES, UNITING SCIENTIFIC PRECISION WITH ARTISTIC EXPRESSION.

From the wind-swept ridges of the Cordilleras to the rain-drenched forests of Mindanao, the Philippines harbors an extraordinary array of flowering plants, some delicate and ephemeral, others striking and enduring. This volume presents a visual and botanical journey through a thoughtfully curated selection of species, uniting scientific precision with artistic expression.
The collection features entries that span from familiar ornamentals to lesser-known native and introduced flora. Each plant is accompanied by finely rendered illustrations and succinct notes on taxonomy, morphology, habitat, and traditional uses. Organized by botanical classification, the volume offers a deeper understanding of the archipelago's ecological richness and cultural relationship with the natural world.
This book reveals the country's remarkable biodiversity and longstanding bond with the plant kingdom, shaped by centuries of cultivation, ritual, and discovery, through the lens of Philippine flora.

Author Biography

Dr. Domingo Madulid is a distinguished botanist, prolific author, and dedicated educator whose work has significantly advanced the understanding of Philippine flora. With over five decades of experience, Dr. Madulid has made remarkable contributions to plant taxonomy, systematics, conservation, and historical botany, earning national and international acclaim for his research and publications.
Dr. Madulid holds a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Reading, England, where he also earned an M.S. in Pure and Applied Plant Taxonomy. He completed an M.S. in Biology (major in Botany) at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, and a B.S. in Botany at the University of the Philippines.
Dr. Madulid's research spans various fields, including inventory and cataloging of Philippine flora, conservation of threatened plants, and historical botany. He has conducted extensive studies on the taxonomy, systematics, and ethnobotany of Philippine plants, publishing 18 books, including four as a sole author, and over 200 scientific articles. His work has led to the description of several new plant species, and in recognition of his impact, six plant species have been named in his honor by fellow botanists.
A trailblazer in Philippine botany, Dr. Madulid initiated the Flora of the Philippines project, collaborating with botanists worldwide. He has served as the founding President of the Association of Systematic Biologists of the Philippines and the President of the Philippine Association of Career Scientists.

Gizzele Eustaquio is a self-taught illustrator whose creative journey began as a form of therapy and blossomed into a career. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Manila Central University and worked as a Licensed Medical Technologist in hospitals and clinical laboratories. However, her passion for art emerged later in life, and what began as a therapeutic pastime soon transformed into her true calling.
Her illustration style is realistic and detailed, with a particular focus on botanical art, birds, and food. Nature has always been her first love, and she finds inspiration in the plants, trees, and seasonal blooms that surround her. From newly blossomed flowers to fallen leaves, Gizzele captures nature's delicate moments, reflecting her own personal journey of growth and transformation.
Watercolor is Gizzele's primary medium, though she also works with colored pencils and ink. She is drawn to the softness and seamless blending of colors in watercolor but is excited to explore other mediums to expand her creative expression.
One of her most significant achievements includes her collaboration on Flowers of The Philippines: A Selection of Botanical Illustrations with renowned Filipino botanist Dr. Domingo A. Madulid, published by Gentry Press Philippines. She also held her first solo exhibit, Efflorescence: The Blossoming of Quiet Strength and Resilience, at One Serendra BGC.
